Dean And Timmer Sweep MVC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week Awards

The Bulldogs have now earned the honor 15 times in the 2015-16 season.

ST. LOUIS – Drake University sophomores Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) of the women's basketball team and Reed Timmer (New Berlin, Wis.) from the men's basketball team have been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, Jan. 12. The honor is the first of Dean's career and the fourth this season for Timmer.

Timmer's honor marks the seventh-consecutive week a Drake men's basketball student-athlete has earned the award. A Drake student-athlete has won the award 15 times in the 21 weeks the honor has been awarded in 2015-16 including three weeks in which the Bulldogs swept the men's and women's honors.

Dean averaged 12.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in Drake's two road wins this past weekend as the Bulldogs improved to 3-1 in MVC play and 10-5 overall. In the win over Missouri State, she just missed a double-double with 16 points and eight rebounds to go with three assists, one block and one steal. Dean was 6-of-12 from the floor, including knocking down four three-pointers, on the Lady Bears. She followed that with nine points, going a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line, along with six rebounds and four assists in Drake's big win at Wichita State.

For the season, Dean is averaging 13.3 points and 8.0 rebounds a game, which ranks rank 11th and eighth in The Valley, respectively. In the classroom, Dean holds a 3.55 grade point average in actuarial science. She was selected to the MVC Academic Honor Roll as a freshman.

Timmer led Drake last week with 11.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. Against UNI, he paced Drake with 10 points and added a career-high eight rebounds. Timmer had 13 points with three assists in the loss to Indiana State and has now scored in double-figures in all but one game this season putting him fourth in the MVC in scoring at 16.9 points per game and second in three-point percentage at 46.3 percent.

Academically, he is a four-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week with a 3.6 GPA in his pharmacy curriculum.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
