SAINT LOUIS, Mo. - Drake University senior Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Huston, a member of the women's track and field team, won the honor for the second time this season after winning the 3,000 meters at last weekend's Big Four Duals. She led the entire race from start-to-finish against competitors from Iowa, Iowa State and UNI and her time of 9:37.89 bested the field by nearly eight seconds. That time was also the third-fastest 3,000-meters in school history.
Academically, Huston maintains a 3.96 grade point average as a biology and environmental science major. In addition to being a two-time Scholar-Athlete of the Week this season, she is a two-time MVC Elite 18 Award winner after claiming the award during the 2015 cross country season and the 2015 outdoor track season.
Huston's honor continues Drake's extensive collection of MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. A Drake student-athlete has won the award 16 times in the 23 weeks the honor has been awarded in 2015-16 including three weeks in which the Bulldogs swept the men's and women's honors.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
