MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Drake University women's tennis team had a tough start at the USTA/ITA Central Regional Championships on Thursday as every Bulldog fell in the round of 128.
Sophomore
Joely Lomas came away with the only victory of the day in the round of 256 as the rest of the team received a bye into the round of 128. Lomas won her first set, 6-2, over South Dakota State's Molly Crum. Crum came back to win the second set 7-6. Lomas responded with a dominating third set, 6-0 victory to advance to the round of 128.
In the round of 128, Lomas dropped a three-set match to K-State's Iva Bago 7-6, 2-6, 6-0. Freshman
Abigail Sogard also fell in three sets, losing to South Dakota State's Zorka Sviban 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. Juniors
Tess Herder and
Summer Brills were paired against seeded opponents in their first match. Herder fell to No. 17 Martina Okalova from Tulsa, 6-1, 6-1 and Brills lost to No. 9 Janet Koch from Kansas, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore
Kenya Williams was setback by K-State's Millie Stetton, 6-3, 6-4, while
Mela Jaglarz fell to Iowa State's Maria Espindola, 6-2, 6-0.
The Bulldogs will begin doubles and play in the singles consolation draw on Friday.
