DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's soccer team returns to the Cownie Soccer Complex to host Evansville on Saturday at 5 p.m. The men's match against the Purple Aces will follow a Drake women's game versus Missouri State that will start at 2 p.m.
Drake (4-8-1, 1-3-1 MVC) welcomes Evansville (7-6-2, 2-2-1 MVC) after going 1-0-1 last week. The Bulldogs snapped a six-game losing streak when they edged Bradley, 1-0, on Oct. 11 followed with a 1-1 draw at Missouri State on Oct. 15.
Redshirt senior
Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn.) scored the game-winner against the Braves. His goal came off a set corner kick piece that started with senior
James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) sending a corner kick into the box that redshirt
James Grunert (Muskego, Wis.) redirected to LeMay, who deflected the ball into the net for his second goal of the year and the eighth of his career.
Freshman
Scott Misselhorn (Cape Town, South Africa) came through for Drake at Missouri State. With the team trailing 1-0, late in the first half, Misselhorn headed a ball in off a corner kick for his first career goal. The two teams traded chances in the second half and overtime sessions with neither team able to deliver as the Bulldogs finished with their first tie of the season. Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) delivered a huge stop on an early Bears' penalty kick.
MacLeod continues to claim all-time program records in his final season. Earlier this season, MacLeod took sole possession of career shutouts. With the win over Bradley, he moved into sole possession of all-time wins with 31 and career minutes with 6,371:40. MacLeod slid into a tie for first all-time in career games with 70. The final record in his sights is career saves as former standout Zach Brennan had 303 in his career. MacLeod has 295 career saves.
Evansville blanked Belmont, 2-0, in its last match. Prior to the non-conference win, the Purple Aces battled Loyola, the MVC leader, to a 1-1 draw on Oct. 15. Junior Ian McGrath is tied for second in the conference in goals with six.
Following Saturday's contest, Drake travels to Peoria, Ill., on Oct. 26 to take on Bradley. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and the midweek match will be broadcast on
The Valley On ESPN3.
