ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the second time this season, senior
James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) of the Drake University men's soccer team has been selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, presented by Eagle Bank and Trust Company of Missouri, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Tuesday Oct. 25. Wypych was honored for his performances during the period of October 17-23.
Wypych recorded a hat trick in Drake's 4-3 loss to Evansville Saturday night. He scored the first goal for Drake and his fourth goal this season in the second minute of the game off of an assist from freshman
Antonio Sanchez. Wypych completed the Bulldogs' second goal on Evansville in the 24th minute off of an assist from sophomore
Nic Jaimes. Drake's final goal of the game, and Wypych's sixth goal of the season, was scored during the 64th minute with another assist by Sanchez. He leads Drake and ranks tied for third in the MVC with six goals.
Wypych was selected for the first-team All-MVC in 2014 and 2015. With a 3.57 GPA in international relations, he also earned Co-SIDA All-District Academic honors and was named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete first-team in 2015.
To qualify for the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week award, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Wypych was honored with Loyola volleyball student-athlete Morgan Reardon.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
Drake plays at Bradley Wednesday at 7 p.m.
