ST. LOUIS, Mo. – For the second time this season, Drake senior
Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) has been named the Eagle Bank Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league announced Oct. 4.
Fischer, a member of the Drake cross country team, finished seventh overall and was the sixth scorer at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Oct. 1. He finished his first 8k of the year in 23:53.25 against the biggest collegiate field in the history of the Chile Pepper Invitational, featuring runners from 65 teams and 17 states.
Fischer held off Arkansas All-American Jack Bruce at the finish line and has led Drake in every race he has competed in this season.
Academically, Fischer holds a 3.81 cumulative grade-point average while double majoring in English and Public Relations.
The honor is the second this season for Fischer as he was previously named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on Sept. 6. He has also twice been named the MVC Cross Country Male Athlete of the Week on Sept. 6 and 13.
Fischer and the cross country team are scheduled to compete next at the adidas Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 15 in Terre Haute, Ind.
