Men’s Soccer Has Five Student-Athletes Earn MVC Honors

The Bulldogs’ 2016 season ended Wednesday in the MVC quarterfinals in a 2-1 loss to Evansville.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Five student-athletes from the Drake University men's soccer team collected Missouri Valley Conference honors Thursday night at the 2016 MVC men's soccer awards banquet in Springfield, Mo.
 
Seniors Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa) and James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) were named to the All-MVC First Team while junior Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan.) and redshirt senior Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) garnered All-MVC Honorable Mention accolades. Rounding out the award winners is freshman Antonio Sanchez (Coralville, Iowa) who was picked to the MVC All-Freshman team.
 
Sunday, a midfielder, earned first team honors for the second-straight year after he started 18-of-19 matches and scored two goals and handed one assist. He was named to the prestigious MAC Hermann watch list prior to the season. Sunday earned all-MVC honorable mention honors as a sophomore and was named to the second team as a freshman.
 
This is Wypych's third-consecutive All-MVC First Team award. The forward, who transferred to Drake from New Mexico prior to the 2014 season, scored a team-leading eight goals, handed out a team-high five assists and tallied a team-best 21 points this season. Wypych scored 20 goals and recorded 10 assists in 57 career matches for the Bulldogs.
 
This is the first all-MVC accolade for Enna, who played in 16 matches and was second on the team in goals scored with five. A forward, Enna, added one assist and finished with 11 points, which ranked second on the squad.
 
It is also the first career all-MVC honor for MacLeod, a goalkeeper, who is the all-time leader in program history in games (76), minutes (6940:22), saves (308), shutouts (19) and wins (33).
 
Sanchez had an outstanding first season as a Bulldog at the forward and midfielder positions. He played in 17 matches and finished second on the team in assists with four. Sanchez scored Drake's goal in the quarterfinals match against Evansville Wednesday.
 
The Bulldogs' 2016 season ended Wednesday in the MVC quarterfinals in a 2-1 loss to Evansville. Drake finished with a 6-12-1 overall record.
