Drake University senior cross country student-athlete
Reed Fischer has been named a State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Good Neighbor Award recipient, the conference announced.
Fischer, the reigning MVC Cross Country Champion and NCAA qualifier, was one of 10 MVC student-athletes to receive this award. To be eligible for the honor, the student-athlete must show good citizenship through high levels of sportsmanship and community service, as well as be in good academic standings. The student- athlete must also be in season during the time of recognition.
Fischer has placed in the top five in four races this season, including a first place finish in the MVC Championships to win his first MVC title. He recently finished seventh in the NCAA Midwest Regional, earning him a spot in the NCAA Championships. Fischer was named MVC Cross Country Athlete of the Week three times and the Eagle Bank MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week twice this season. He is also an eight-time MVC Scholar-Athlete team selection.
Fischer is equally successful in the classroom as he is in competition. The Public Relation and English major has been on the President's List for two straight years with a 3.81 GPA. Fischer has also received the MVC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award two years in a row and was recently named the MVC Elite 18 Award winner for cross country.
In the community, Fischer has volunteered with the Bulldog Pride Chair, Drake Bulldog Club Fundraising Group, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee) Executive Committee member has also spent time helping at community resource centers and public school districts.
Fischer continues his athletic season this weekend at the NCAA Cross Country on Saturday, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind. Fischer is set to race in the national championship field at 11 a.m. CST.
