DES MOINES, Iowa – The Creighton Bluejays edged the Drake University rowing team Saturday morning in the program's annual fall duel on the Des Moines River.
Creighton defeated Drake in the varsity 4+ and 2
nd varsity 8+ races to retain the traveling trophy awarded to the winner in the rivalry. The Bulldogs rallied to win the varsity 8+ race over the Bluejays.
"The team rowed really hard today," said Drake head coach
Charlie DiSilvestro. "Stiff competition today, which we knew it would be, but the team performed really well. They felt they that the boats had the best rows that they potentially could have. That is all we can ask for."
In the non-scored races, novice 8+ 1, 2 & 3 and the 2
nd varsity 4+, Creighton won the 2
nd varsity 4+ and novice 8+ B races while Drake took the novice 8+ A & C races.
With the nice weather Des Moines has had this fall and with daylight savings time starting Sunday, the Bulldogs will take advantage and stay out on the Des Moines River training for one more week then they typically do.
"The weather is supposed to hold and we will take one more week to work on good technique," DiSilvestro said. "Get video and really work on final improvement as the semester comes to an end soon. I'm really proud of how the team came together this fall dealing with the tough water conditions we had. We made steady improvement and I'm excited for our spring season."
