Track & Field Opens Indoor Season With 25 Top-3 Finishes

Bulldogs warm up before beginning indoor season in earnest in January

PELLA, Iowa – The Drake University track and field teams got an early start to their indoor season with 25 top-three finishes at Central College's Dutch Holiday preview meet on Dec. 3.

The Bulldogs were also atop the team standings with the men recording 124.5 points to win while the women recorded 139 points to lead the 12-team field. Six of the Bulldogs' performances rank in the top 50 nationally after the first weekend of the season.

In the field events, Michael Dolan (Lincolnshire, Ill.) finished second in the weight throw with a personal best of 54-1, the third best mark in school history while Johnathan Osifuye (Woodbury, Minn.) won the triple jump. Forest Moses (Highland Park, Ill.) was third in the high jump with a personal best of 6-7.5.

On the track, Demetrius Shelton (Markham, Ill.) had a pair of top-two finishes by winning the 60 meters in 6.92 and finishing second in the 300 meters in 35.92. Bas Van Leersum (Zaandam, The Netherlands) also won the 600 meters while George Webb (Morton Grove, Ill.) took top honors in the 1,000 meters.

For the women, Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) had a two top-two finishes in winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62 and finishing second in the 60 meters in 7.87. She also ran a leg on one of the Bulldogs' 4x400-meter relay teams, as did Rai Ahmed-Green (Irvine, Calif.) who won the 300 meters in 40.28 and finished fourth in the 60 meters.

In the women's field events, newcomer Tamar Mosby (Belleville, Ill.) won the high jump while Christian LeMunyon (Overland Park, Kan.) and Taryn Rolle (Nassau, The Bahamas) won the pole vault and triple jump, respectively.

Six of the Bulldogs' performances at the season-opening meet rank in the top-50 in the nation. Young, ranks 15th in women's 60-meter hurdles at 8.62 while Osifuye ranks 16th in the men's triple jump. In men's high jump, Moses ranks 33 with his personal best jump while Erik Olson checks in at 46th nationally in the pole vault with a clearance of 14-7.25 in his debut. Shelton's season-opening 60-meter time was the 42nd fastest in the nation while Dolan's personal best mark in the weight throw was the 50th best toss in the nation to open the season.

The Bulldogs will train through the next month and holiday break in preparation for their next competition on Jan. 13-14 at the Holiday Inn Invite in Lincoln, Neb.
