BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior
Megan Sowa (Gurnee, Ill.) delivered a walk-off double in the ninth inning for the Drake University softball team to defeat Ohio, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Indiana Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
Sowa had a great day at the plate for Drake (8-7) finishing with three hits, including two doubles, along with three runs batted in and one run scored along with drawing two walks. Sophomore
Kelsey Wright (Olathe, Kan.) had her first career four-hit game, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored.
Ohio claimed an early 2-0 lead scoring one run in the second inning and another in the third. Drake quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of third as Sowa drove in the first with a double and freshman
Taryn Pena (Columbia, Ill.) followed with an RBI single to bring in Sowa to even the score at 2-2.
Sowa gave Drake the lead in the fourth inning this time on an RBI single to score Wright once again. The game stayed 3-2 until the sixth inning when the Bobcats hit a solo home run off Drake starting pitcher
Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) to tie the game at 3-3.
The score was still 3-3 at the end of seven innings so the international tiebreaker was used so a runner was placed on second base to start each at-bat for the Bobcats and the Bulldogs.
Ohio struck first in the eighth inning with a bases-loaded hit by pitch allowed by Newman to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Bobcats. However, sophomore
Tasha Alexander (Eddyville, Iowa) tied the game in Drake's next at-bat with a sacrifice fly that scored pinch runner
Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa).
Newman worked around runners on first and second base in the top of the ninth inning. Her defense came up big with a key out on a base hit as a Bobcats base runner was thrown out at third base after getting into a rundown.
Newman pitched all nine innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks. She improved to 7-3 on the season. Alexander had two hits in the game.
Drake and Ohio play again on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in Bloomington, Ind.
