ST. LOUIS – Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa), a senior on the Drake University track and field team, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the fifth time this season.
This past weekend at the Musco Twilight, Huston shattered another school record, this time in the 1,500 meters. She turned in a time of 4:20.82 to win the event and break the previous school record by nearly three seconds. It was also a nine-second personal best for Huston who now owns four Drake school records.
Earlier in the season she set school records in the indoor 5,000 meters, outdoor 5,000 meters and 3,000 meters. Her most recent school record ranks as the fastest in the MVC this season by nearly three seconds. In the West Region, she ranks 10th in the 10,000 meters, 35th in the 1,500 meters and 18th in the 5,000 meters.
Huston, who owns a 3.97 grade point average as a biology and environmental science major, has previously been named the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week on April 5, Feb. 16, Jan. 26 and Oct. 19. The honor continues Drake's extensive collection of MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. A Drake student-athlete has won the award 21 times in the 36 weeks the honor has been awarded in 2015-16 including three weeks in which the Bulldogs swept the men's and women's honors.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
