Huston Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week For the Fourth Time

Senior collects honor after breaking the Bulldogs' 33-year-old school record in the 5,000 meters.

Drake University senior Emma Huston (Des Moines, Iowa) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Student-Athlete of the Week for the fourth time this year, the MVC announced Tuesday, April 5.

Huston, a member of the Drake track and field team, shattered the Bulldogs' 33-year-old school record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 16:06.55 in her heat at the Stanford Invitational on Friday. Her time bested the previous record by nearly 10 seconds and was a 21-second personal best in the event. Her performance is the 17th best in the nation this season, 12th best in the West region and the fastest in the MVC my nearly a full minute. During the indoor season, she also set the school record in the indoor 5,000 meters.

The Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is the fourth this year for Huston, who owns a 3.97 grade point average as a biology/environmental science major and was an  MVC Elite 18 winner during the cross country season.

Huston's most recent honor continues Drake's extensive collection of MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards. A Drake student-athlete has won the award 19 times in the 32 weeks the honor has been awarded in 2015-16 including three weeks in which the Bulldogs swept the men's and women's honors.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
