TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Drake's Robert McCann (Mississauga, Ontario) won the 3,000-meter steeplechase on the second day of the 2016 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship to highlight action for the Bulldogs.


McCann established a seven-second lead in the race, finishing in 8:43.00 to establish a personal best and the second-fastest time in school history. The win continues an outstanding season for McCann following a Drake Relays title in the same event two weeks ago. 


In addition to McCann's title, the Bulldogs also scored in the women's long jump with Kayla Bell (Bolingbrook, Ill.) taking third with a jump of 18-8.5 that she recorded on her second jump of the day to earn all-conference honors.


The majority of competition on Saturday was preliminary action to set the stage for the final day of competition on Sunday. In those preliminary heats, the Bulldogs advanced eight performances to the finals. On Friday, four Bulldogs advanced to give the team plenty of representation in the finals.


Drake will again collect points in the hurdles as Bulldogs recorded six of the top qualifying times of the day in the hurdles. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) clocked the third fastest time of the day in 13.58 while Destani Welch (Des Moines, Iowa) was sixth in 14.18 to advance as well.


Young returned in the 400-meter hurdles to finish in sixth in 1:06.35 while Virginia Hill (Haymarket, Va.) was second in 1:00.70 to give Drake two competitors in that final as well. The men will be equally represented in the 400-meter hurdles and Drake had the top two qualifying times of the day. Bas Van Leersum (Zaandam, The Netherlands) led the way in 52.34 followed by Husdon Priebe (Chamberlain, S.D.) in 52.56.


A pair of men also advanced to the 100-meter finals with Demetrius Shelton (Markham, Ill.) taking fourth in the preliminary heats in 10.66 followed by Pierce Vincent (Fayetteville, Ga.) in fifth in 10.67.


Action in those final events begins on Sunday at noon for the field events and at 1 p.m. on the track.
