OMAHA, Neb. – The Drake University men's soccer team continues its five-match road trip to open the regular season with an away match at Omaha on Friday, Sept. 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Drake holds a 1-1 record after starting the season in California with a loss at Pacific and a win at CSU Bakersfield over the weekend.
Senior
James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) scored a golden goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime session to lift the Bulldogs past the Roadrunners, 1-0. The assist went to freshman
Antonio Sanchez (Coralville, Iowa) who sent a cross to Wypych that he headed in the net from five yards out.
Senior goalkeeper
Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario) made history with the shutout of CSU Bakersfield. It was the 16
th in his decorated career and he assumed the top spot in program history in shutouts. MacLeod has a chance to become the leader in several other goalkeeper all-time statistical categories in his final season.
Last season, Drake and Omaha battled to a 1-1 draw at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. Wypych scored a late goal in regulation to force overtime as the two teams then failed to score in both overtimes. The Mavericks opened the season last Friday at home with a 3-1 win over San Francisco before falling at then No. 16 UConn on Sunday, 2-0.
Drake returns to action Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Milwaukee with a 7 p.m. match.
