Men's Soccer Has Comeback Attempt At UIC Fall Short

Drake battled back from 3-0 deficit with two late goals

CHICAGO – The Drake University men's soccer team mounted a late comeback attempt at UIC that fell just short as the Flames held on for a 3-2 win, Tuesday, Sept. 20 evening at Flames Field.
 
Neither Drake (3-5-0) or UIC (2-5-1) scored in the first half as the Bulldogs did not attempt a shot and Flames had eight.
 
In the second half, UIC scored three goals in the first 18:20 of play to lead 3-0. However, a resilient Drake squad responded with a massive comeback attempt.
 
Senior Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa) scored the Bulldogs' first goal in the 74th minute (74:22). Redshirt sophomore Paul Ciszewski (Germantown, Wis.) sent a free kick to the right side of the box that Sunday shot into the opposite side of the goal. It is the first goal this season for Sunday.
 
With the clock winding down and trailing 3-1, it was a first-time goal-scorer off the bench that came up big for Drake in the 87th minute. Senior Adam Weatherly (Parkville, Mo.) scored his first career goal after receiving a pass off a free kick from sophomore Nic Jaimes (Olathe, Kan.) as Weatherly collected the ball and shot it from the top of the box past the UIC goalkeeper, Andrew Putna.
 
Junior Steven Enna (Overland Park, Kan.) nearly tied the game minutes later as he headed a ball that went left of the goal as the Flames ran out the clock to hold on for the win.

After being held without a shot in the first half, Drake doubled up UIC in shot attempts in the final half at 10-5. Enna and redshirt freshman Adam Nicholson (Iowa City, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with two shots each.

"Tonight we could see the impact of a heavy travel schedule," said acting head coach Kyle Smith. "With six of the first eight games in the road, and a tight turnaround against Loyola, we looked a little fatigued and slow to get up to the pace of the game. We defended well in the first half but never really go going in the attacking phase of the game until the last 20-25 minutes. Although a tremendous effort from the team to pull it back to 3-2, it was not enough tie the game up. The short break will be good for the guys to refresh and regroup for Western Michigan next week."

Drake continues non-conference play at Western Michigan on Sept. 27 with first kick scheduled for 3 p.m.
