LINCOLN, Neb. – The Drake University track and field team's distance runners led the way for the Bulldogs on the first day of the Holiday Inn Invite, hosted by the University of Nebraska, Jan. 13.
Bailee Cofer (Overland Park, Kan.) paced the women's team with a personal best in the 3,000 meters in her first competition of the season. The junior finished in 10:03.73 while freshman
Mykaela Cole (Urbandale, Iowa) followed in Cofer's wake in sixth place. Fellow freshman
Morgan Garcia (Marion, Iowa) took fourth in the mile with a 5:19.90 finish.
The men's distance crew had senior
Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) make his season debut with a fourth-place finish in the mile via a time of 4:18.06 in his first competitive mile since his freshman season. Fellow veteran
George Webb (Morton Grove, Ill.) was seventh in 4:25.66.
A pair of Bulldogs also clocked top-10 finishes in the men's 3,000 meters as freshman
Kyle Cass (Deforest, Wis.) was seventh in 8:56.31 while
Chris Kaminski (New Lenox, Ill.) was a little more than four seconds behind in ninth.
Also on the track,
Dominic Lombardi (Columbus, Ohio) advanced to the finals of the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.55 to finish eighth in the preliminary heats.
Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) narrowly missed a personal best in the 60 meters with a time of 7.88 to finish fourth in the qualifying heats and advance to Saturday's finals.
Mariah Crawford also advanced with the sixth-fastest qualifying time of 7.98.
The Bulldogs continue competition at the Holiday Inn Invite Saturday, Jan. 14, with action resuming at noon inside the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
