Fischer Breaks School Record In The Indoor 5,000 Meters

Senior shatters a second school for the second-consecutive week.

AMES, Iowa – Drake University track and field senior Reed Fischer (Minnetonka, Minn.) broke his second school record in as many weeks Friday evening at the Iowa State Classic.

Fischer's time of 13:55.27 in the indoor 5,000 meters bested the previous record held by Bulldog great Brogan Austin by more than four seconds. Last week at the Meyo Invitational, Fischer set the school record in the indoor 3,000 meters.

"It's great to see Reed racing so well when his focus is on his training during the indoor season," said Drake co-interim head coach Dan Hostager. "He nearly won his heat in a photo finish in just his second real race of the season and there's lots of big things ahead for him this season."

Fischer's time was the 14th fastest on the day and one of the top times in the nation as he and the Bulldogs competed against some of the nation's top teams at the Iowa State Classic including athletes from programs like Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa, Iowa State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin in addition to Missouri Valley Conference foes like UNI, Illinois State and Bradley.

In addition to Fischer's school record, the Drake women's distance runners got a personal best from freshman Mykaela Cole (Urbandale, Iowa) in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:19.04 to finish 17th in the talented field. Joshua Yeager (Center Point, Iowa) was 12th in the men's 3,000 meters in 8:29.25.

Other Bulldogs competed on the track in preliminary heats of the 60 meters and 200 meters with Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) and Mariah Crawford taking 12th and 13th in the 60 and 200 meters, respectively.

In the field events, the Bulldogs had a pair of eighth-place finishes in the long jump as Johnathan Osifuye (Woodbury, Minn.) was eighth in the men's long jump with a mark of 22-8 while Taryn Rolle (Nassau, The Bahamas) was eighth in the women's field at 18-1.

The Bulldogs return to the Iowa State Classic for the second day of competition on Saturday, Feb. 11, with events starting at noon inside ISU's Lied Athletic Recreation Center.
