Verbeeck To Enter Drake Relays Hall of Fame

Belgian international created a diverse Drake Relays legacy while competing for Iowa State

The Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee is set to induct three standout athletes and coaches into the prestigious Drake Relays Athletes Hall of Fame during the 108th running of the Drake Relays.

Bob Verbeeck is the second inductee named to this year's Hall of Fame Class. Verbeeck won the university-college 1,500 meters at the 1982 and 1983 Drake Relays, narrowly missing the meet record in 1983 with a time of 3:42.88. Verbeeck anchored the Cyclones 4x1,600-meter relay at the 1981 Drake Relays, breaking the school record by 4.5 seconds. Iowa State's time of 16:09.45 still stands as a Drake Relays record.

Off of the Blue Oval, Verbeeck holds the distinction of being the first Iowa collegian to run a sub-4 minute mile and remains Iowa State's record holder with a time of 3:57.98. Verbeeck finished his collegiate career as a two-time All-American, including a 1984 NCAA title in the 1,500 meters. He was a six-time Big Eight Conference champion with two outdoor 1,500 meter titles. A three-time top-40 finisher at the NCAA cross country championships, Verbeeck was named Iowa State's male athlete of the year in 1984 before receiving an NCAA postgraduate scholarship.

Following the conclusion of his collegiate career, Verbeeck represented Belgium at the 1984 Olympic Games finishing 13th in the 5,000 meters before winning gold in the 3,000 meters at the 1985 European Indoor Championships.

Verbeeck is currently the CEO of Golazo, an international sports marketing and management company in Belgium.
