DES MOINES, Iowa – Blake Boldon, the Franklin P. Johnson Director of the Drake Relays, has announced the finalized fields for the Rio Olympic Rematch events at the 2017 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee. The final fields include the addition of Urbandale, Iowa, native and current Missouri standout Karissa Schweizer to the women's 1,500 meters.
Schweizer will race against a pair of Iowa Olympians in 2016 bronze medalist Jenny Simpson and Shelby Houlihan as part of a field that includes six Olympians.
The Rio Olympic Rematch events now feature 68 Olympians that have won a total of 30 Olympic medals. Those events begin Friday at 5:45 p.m. with the women's pole vault. Seven total Rio Olympic Rematch events will be staged on Friday as part of Hy-Vee Night at the Drake Relays followed by seven more on Saturday.
Boldon also announced that Purdue's Devynne Charlton, a Bahamian national, has been added to the women's 100-meter hurdles field. There she will face world record holder Keni Harrison, Olympic bronze medalist Kristi Castlin and two-time Olympic medalist Dawn Harper-Nelson.
"One of the exciting features of the Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee is that our fans get the unique opportunity to see the future stars of the sport compete alongside the world's best right here in Des Moines," Boldon said. "Devynne Charlton is an exciting addition to a world-class 100-meter hurdles field and Karissa has earned the opportunity to compete alongside fellow Iowans Jenny Simpson and Shelby Houlihan. They are rising stars in the sport and we're thrilled to give our fans the chance to see them compete on a big stage."
