ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Drake University senior
Reed Fischer has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week and the Enterprise Bank MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week following his record-setting performance at the 2017 Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee.
Fischer became the latest Bulldog to become a Drake Relays champion by winning the men's 5,000 meters on Thursday evening at the conclusion of the annual Distance Carnival. In addition to the title, he shattered the school record by finishing in 13:48.32 to claim his third school record of the season. His time broke the previous record, set in 1978, by nearly 12 seconds.
Also, Fischer's time was the fastest winning time in the 5,000 meters at the Drake Relays since 1988 and is currently the fastest in the Valley by more than 15 seconds.
Academically, the MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week honor is the seventh of the season for Fischer and the 16
th by a Drake student-athlete this year. Fischer owns a 3.81 grade point average as an English/public relations major.
