The 2016-17 season featured many thrilling moments and accomplishments for Drake athletics. From conference titles, outstanding team and individual accomplishments, postseason appearances and significant regular season victories, the Bulldogs had plenty to celebrate as they look forward to the upcoming season. Before embarking on 2017-18, www.GoDrakeBulldogs.com will take a look back at the top 10 moments of the 2016-17 throughout the months of June and July.
The No. 5 moment of the 2016-17 season comes after the men's tennis team earning its 10
th MVC Tournament title with a 4-0 sweep over Southern Illinois on April 30. Strong doubles performance at courts two and three. Sophomores
Vinny Gillespie and
Tom Hands defeated Michal Klanicka and Daniel Martinez 6-2 at No. 2, while juniors
Ben Stride and
Ben Wood clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at No. 3.
Hands extended in singles winning streak five matches with a 6-1, 6-0 trouncing over Martinez at No. 5 singles. Sophomore
Ben Clark extended the Bulldogs lead to 3-0 after cruising past Param Pun, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 6. Junior
Calum MacGeoch secured the championship for Drake with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alex Pozo at No. 4.
The team suffered a tough 4-0 loss to Illinois in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs started strong with Gillespie and Hands earning a 6-3 win over Vuk Budic and Aleks Vukic. But, Illinois was able to slip ahead in the other matches during the competition and ultimately end Drake's 2017-16 season.
