The Drake University men's basketball team has been honored by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) with the Team Academic Excellence Award.
 
The award recognizes outstanding academic achievement by teams with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better during the 2016-17 season. The Bulldogs are one of just two Missouri Valley Conference programs to earn the award and the only Division I program in the state of Iowa recognized by the NABC. Fewer than 50 NCAA Division I teams were recognized by the NABC and the Bulldogs have earned the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award in two of the last three seasons.
 
The honor is another in the long list of academic honors the men's basketball earned in 2016-17. Four Bulldogs were named to the MVC Scholar-Athlete team, including two-time MVC Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year Reed Timmer.
