Volleyball Wins Titan Tournament Championship

Plock named tournament co-MVP

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Drake University volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the Fullerton Titan Tournament to finish the two-day event with a 3-1 record and claim the Titan Tournament title.

The Bulldogs opened the second day of the tournament with a 3-0 sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson followed by a 3-1 loss to UC Riverside in the nightcap. On Friday, Drake defeated Bryant and Cal State Fullerton.

In addition to the Titan Tournament title, two Bulldogs earned all-tournament honors with freshman Emily Plock (Altoona, Iowa) being named tournament co-MVP. Plock finished the tournament with 44 kills while hitting .305 with 11 blocks. Paige Aspinwall (Dayton, Minn.) earned a spot on the all-tournament team with 111 assists in four matches. Additionally, senior Kyla Inderski (Urbandale, Iowa) finished the weekend with 50 kills to move her into sixth all-time in kills at Drake with 1,094.

The Bulldogs opened the afternoon with a convincing 3-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson as the team hit .254 behind 10 kills on 25 attempts from Inderski and nine from Cathryn Cheek (Coppell, Texas). Grace Schofield (Mundelein, Ill.) added 10 digs while Paige Aspinwall (Maple Grove, Ill.) and Sara Jensen (Brighton, Mich.) combined for 29 assists. The Bulldogs swept the match by set scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-17.

Against UC Riverside, Inderski recorded 13 kills and 10 digs for the Bulldogs while Cheek added 11 kills. However, it wasn't enough to counter UC Riverside's Mikaela Grove's 18 kills on .368 hitting. UC Riverside used a 6-0 run early in the first set to pull away early for 25-23 win and followed that by closing the second set on a 12-4 run to take the set, 25-18. Drake responded by hitting .538 in the third set to never trail in cruising to a 25-19 win before falling in the final set, 25-19, as UC Riverside closed the match on a 6-1 streak.

The Bulldogs return to action next weekend with three matches at the JMU Invitational beginning with a Sept. 1 contest against Hampton.
