DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's tennis team had a pair of doubles teams advance to the semifinals of their respective draws on the first day of the Drake Invitational at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center on Friday.
Summer Brills and
Liza Petushkova advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A doubles draw with two convincing victories, blanking North Dakota's Sullivan/Yasunaga 8-0 and then beating UNO's Boyer/Lorentz 8-3.
Mela Jaglarz and
Megan Webb moved on to the semifinals of the Flight B doubles draw after earning a pair of 8-4 for victories over UND's Nakasota/Wessman and USD's Wich/Aly, respectively.
In singles,
Tess Herder defeated South Dakota's Barbora Kollarova 6-0, 7-6 (8), while Brill cruised past Preethi Kasilingam from North Dakota 6-3, 6-1 in Flight A.
In Flight B, freshman Petushkova rolled past UNO's Natalie Lorentz 6-1, 6-2 for her first career collegiate singles victory.
Kenya Williams fell to Northern Illinois's Maria Potsi 6-5, 6-2 to opener her junior season.
Jaglarz rounded out the Bulldogs' day with a three-set thriller, beating Augustana's Annika Teske 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in Flight D.
The Bulldogs will play the second day of the Drake Invitational on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.
