MALIBU, Calif. – Drake University men's tennis Vinny Gillespie advanced to the second round in singles draw and to the quarterfinals in the mixed doubles draw of the Oracle ITA Masters Tournament on Thursday in Malibu, Calif.
 
The junior from Stirling, Scotland was paired up with Stony Brook's Elizabeth Tsvetkov and began their day with a 6-4 victory over Andrea Lazaro and Adam Moundir from Florida International and Old Dominion, respectively.
 
Gillespie then earned a straight set win over Abilene Christian's Josh Sheehy, 7-6, 7-6, to move on to the second round in singles.
 
Gillespie and Tsvetkov closed out the opening day of the event by upsetting No. 7 seeded Miroshnickenko/Bushamuka (LMU/Kentucky), 6-4 to advance to the mixed doubles quarterfinals.
 
Gillespie will continue competition at in Oracle ITA Masters on Friday, while the rest of the Bulldogs will open their season by hosting the Drake Invitational.
