Women's Tennis Competes at Milwaukee Tennis Classic and Gopher Invite

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Drake University women's tennis team continued their fall season by splitting up the squad, as Summer Brills and Tess Herder played at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, while the rest of the team competing at the Gopher Invitational on Friday.
 
Herder advanced to the second-round with a three-set thriller over Iowa's Danielle Burich, 7-5, 0-6, 7-6(4). In the second-round, Herder fell to top-seeded Sinead Lohan from Miami (Fla.), 6-1, 7-6(6).
 
Brills dropped her opening singles match 6-4, 6-4 to Wisconsin's Sara Castellano, but bounced back to roll past Milwaukee's Anna Daniel-Fuentes 6-2, 6-3 in the consolation draw.
 
In doubles, Herder and Brills earned a first-round 8-3 victory over Wisconsin's Kemberle/Linden. The senior duo fell in the second-round to North Texas' Kononova/Kutubido 8-0.
 
At the Gopher Invitational, junior Joely Lomas and freshman Megan Webb came away with a pair of doubles wins to highlight the team's effort. Lomas and Webb began the event with a 6-4 win over Nebraska's Haakenstand/Bangoura and then capped off their day with a hard fought 7-6(7) victory over Minnesota's Ryba/Vargas. In singles, senior Mela Jaglarz cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win over South Dakota State's Daria Yakovleva in the first-round and then advanced to the semifinals due to injury in her draw.
 
The Bulldogs will continue play on Saturday.
