MADISON, Ill. – The Drake University men's golf team posted a score of 601 (301-300) and is in ninth-place through 36 holes at the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational Monday at the Founder's Club in Madison, Ill.
"We were disappointed with our play today. We had too many big numbers in both rounds," said Drake head coach
Matt Lewis. " I thought the guys were a little tight and pressing too much. With that being said, being in ninth out of 17 we definitely see an opportunity tomorrow. Our goal is to be loose and confident and go low tomorrow."
Senior
Drew Ison led the team as he started the day shooting a two-over par 73 and then carded a three-over 74 for a total score of 147, tied for 19th-place. After shooting a 76, freshman
Tim Lim fired a 73 for a total score 149. Sophomore
Chase Wicklund recorded a score of 151 (75-76), while junior
Tommi Avant registered a 154 (77-77). Fellow junior
Jack Kennedy rounded the team's effort with a 161 (79-82).
The Bulldogs are just seven strokes behind eighth-place new MVC foe Valparaiso (596), while holding a two-shot lead 10th-place Northern Iowa. SUIE leads the 17-team field with a score of 553 and has a 13-stroke lead over second-place Bradley (566).
Playing as an individual, sophomore
Kyle MacDonald fired a career-best 71 to start his day and then topped that by firing a one-under par 70 to close out his day.
"I was very proud of Kyle playing solid all day. I think today provided a big boost to his confidence," said Lewis.
The Bulldogs will play the final round of the SIUE Derek Dolenc Invitational on Tueday.
