Women’s Soccer Falls to No. 16 Wisconsin, 3-0

Drake has a quick turnaround as it welcomes South Dakota State on Sunday for a noon match.

DES MOINES, Iowa – No. 16 Wisconsin defeated the Drake University women's soccer team, 3-0, on Thursday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.

"Wisconsin was dynamic in the attack and have some difference makers in midfield that presented a challenge for us tonight," said head coach Lindsey Horner. "Different then in our draw against them last year, we had some obvious goal scoring chances. While we all hate losing, especially at home, I believe tonight will make us better."

Wisconsin (6-1) scored its first goal in the 14th minute (14:50) as Dani Rhodes took a pass from Victoria Picketts and beat Drake (3-3) goalkeeper Haley Morris (Clive, Iowa). Later, the Badgers added their second goal in the 31st minute (31:07) as Camryn Biegalski knocked in a ball after Morris initially saved a corner kick by Lauren Rice.

The Badgers tallied their final goal in the 72nd minute (72:1) minute as Emily Borgmann found the back of the net.

As a team, Drake recorded seven shots to 22 for Wisconsin. Sophomore Annie Schmitz (St. Louis, Mo.) led the Bulldogs with two shots on goal. Junior Alyssa Brand (Skokie, Ill.) added one shot on goal. Morris finished with a career-high and program-tying 14 saves, including a key stop of a Wisconsin penalty kick in the ninth minute.

"We had several stand out individual performances,' Horner said. "Rebecca Rodgers (Peotone, Ill.) is looking like she is getting close to her dangerous best. Annie caused countless problems with her positive running on the ball. Alyssa held her own in central midfield while Ali Smith (Lenexa, Kan.) marshalled our backline against likely the best attack we will see this year."

Drake has a quick turnaround as it welcomes South Dakota State on Sunday for a noon match. The contest against the Jackrabbits will be broadcast on The Valley on ESPN3.

"We got valuable learning minutes against a strong side for four of our freshmen," Horner said.  "Thus, far in our development we have done a good job of learning from our mistakes and coming back stronger on game day. Sunday will be a great opportunity for us to get back out to our home field against a team that played in the NCAA tournament and was our lone non-conference loss last year."
