DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University swept UAB, 4-0, and George Washington, 7-0, in dominating fashion on Friday at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
"We got through today with two nice wins. Everyone on the team contributed, which was fantastic. We tested ourselves with some different doubles teams and then everyone took care of business in singles to get us two solid wins," said Drake head coach
Davidson Kozlowski.
The Bulldogs took the doubles point swiftly over the Blazers, winning 6-1, 6-3 on court No. 3 and No. 2, respectively.
Drake didn't slow down in singles as freshman
Freddie Powell won 7-5, 6-2 over Tom El Safadi at No. 6 to put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
Barny Thorold cruised past Giovani Pasini, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2, while
Ben Wood clinched the 4-0 victory with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5.
In the nightcap against George Washington, the Bulldogs swept all three doubles matches.
Wood blanked Kaan Tuna 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, while Powell topped Amlan Sahoo 6-1, 6-2 to give Drake a 3-0 lead.
Finley Hall secured the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Jakub Behun at No. 4., extending Drake's winning streak to six matches.
"We will take tomorrow off and prepare for a big Summit League showdown with Denver on Sunday," said Kozlowski.
The Bulldogs wrap up the weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m. when they welcome defending Summit League champions Denver.
