DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University men's tennis is set to host Summit League foe South Dakota State and in-state rivals Iowa on Friday at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The Bulldogs will close out their weekend on Saturday when they host Arizona.
The Bulldogs are coming off a tough weekend as the fell to Michigan State and New Mexico before righting the ship at Omaha to start Summit League play 1-0. Drake has been led by its strong junior class,
Ben Clark,
Vinny Gillespie and
Tom Hands. Clark has started the season with a 6-0 record, while Gillespie has registered two nationally ranked wins at No. 1 to be ranked 120th in the latest ITA Rankings. Hands, who played at No. 4 and No. 5 last year, has stepped put together a 4-2 record an No. 2 singles.
South Dakota comes to Des Moines with a winless record (0-4) with losses to Division II Nebraska-Kearney and Rockhurst last weekend.
The Hawkeyes have dropped their last four matches after starting the season with a 7-0 win over Marquette. Iowa fell to Miami (5-2) in its last time out.
Arizona travels to the Midwest for the second-straight week as the Bearcats fell at Indiana last weekend. Prior to the setback in Bloomington, Ind., Arizona rattled off three-straight wins over St. Mary's (Calif.), San Francisco and Abilene Christian.
Following this weekend's matches, Drake hosts UAB and George Washington on Friday Feb. 16 and Denver on Sunday, Feb. 18.
