FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A pair of event wins by
Taryn Rolle (Nassau, The Bahamas) and
Kundai Maguranyanga (Glen Zorah, Zimbabwe) helped lead the Drake University track and field teams to 22 top-ten finishes at the Arkansas Spring Invitational Saturday.
Rolle defended her Spring Invitational triple jump title from a year ago with a mark of 29-7 1/4 while Maguranyanga ran a time of 21.08 to win the 200 meters. Maguranyanga's time is the fastest from a Bulldog since 1981 and ranks fourth all-time in school history.
Senior
Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) took third in the 100-meter hurdles while
Victoria Coombe (Centennial, Colo.) narrowly missed a personal-best in the 400-meter hurdles to take third with a time of 1:01.27.
Bailee Cofer (Overland Park, Kan.) pulled in a sixth-place finish in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:06.98.
The strong showing from the Bulldogs middle-distance runners was led by
Kevin Kelly (Kilcok, Ireland). Kelly took second in the invitational division of the 1,500 meters.
Kyle Brandt (Maple Grove, Minn.) took third as one of three Bulldogs to finish top-10 in the 3,000 meters. Brandt shaved over five seconds off his personal-best with a time of 8:34.29 while
Josh Yeager (Center Point, Iowa) and
Kyle Cass (Deforest, Wis.) also recorded personal-bests to finish in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Malik Metivier (Toronto, Ont.) and
Deonne Witherspoon (South Bend, Ind.) were two more Bulldogs to take top-five finishes with personal-bests. Metivier ran 52.17 to take second in the 400-meter hurdles while Witherspoon ranked fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 10.74.
Caulin Graves (Kansas City, Mo.) and
Blair Barrow (Boynton Beach, Fla.) joined Metivier and Maguranyanga in the 4x100 relay to finish in 40.63 and rank third behind two Arkansas teams that set a new meet record.
Drake has a two-week break from competition as it prepares for the Jim Duncan Invitational April 13-14 at Drake Stadium.
