Softball Set For Busy Week of Games In Oklahoma

Following the Hall of Fame Classic, Drake opens Missouri Valley Conference play with a three-game series at Evansville, March 17-18.

The Drake University softball team is set to play six games in four days in Oklahoma as it closes out its non-conference tournament schedule. The Bulldogs travel to Tulsa, Okla. for a Thursday night matchup against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane at 5 p.m. before participating in the Hall of Fame Classic, which will take place in Oklahoma City, Okla., March 9-11. Every game of the Hall of Fame Classic will be streamed free via this link.

Drake (12-7) opens action at the Hall of Fame Classic on Friday with a 1:30 p.m. game against Connecticut before taking on tournament host and No. 21/RV Oklahoma State at 6:30 p.m. The Bulldogs resume action Saturday with contests against St. Francis and Pacific at 1:30 and 4 p.m., respectively. Drake closes out the tournament Sunday versus Purdue at 12:30 p.m.

Last weekend, the Bulldogs went 2-3 at the Mizzou Tournament, dropping a pair of games to Missouri while splitting with Creighton. Drake also picked up a 7-2 victory over Southeastern Louisiana.

Freshman Macy Johnson (Winterset, Iowa) continues to impress in her freshman campaign hitting .500 (6-for-12) over the weekend. Johnson, who is batting a team-best .410 on the season, scored or batted in seven of Drake's 16 runs in the tournament.

Despite recording her first loss of the season against Missouri, Nicole Newman (Madison, Wis.) pitched seven innings in the 2-1 victory over Creighton. Newman (6-1) allowed just one run on three hits with 10 strikeouts against the Bluejays. The Bulldogs are one of only seven schools nationally to have two pitchers ranked in the top 50 nationally for earned run average. Newman and Kailee Smith (Murrieta, Calif.) hold 1.00 and 1.05 ERAs, respectively, this season.

Tulsa (12-7) went undefeated last weekend at the North Texas Invitational with one win over North Texas and two wins each over Nicholls State and UT Arlington. The Golden Hurricane have won nine of their last ten games, including seven-straight.

Connecticut (7-12) will look to rebound in Oklahoma City following an 0-6 performance at the I-75 Challenge with losses to Georgia State (2), Georgia Tech (2) and Kennesaw State.

Oklahoma State (14-6) is coming off a 5-0 weekend at home in Stillwater in the Mizuno Classic with victories over Omaha (2), Maine (2) and St. Francis. Five of the Cowgirls six losses have come against teams ranked or receiving votes in the Top 25 polls. The team is led by sophomore pitcher Logan Simunek who recorded Oklahoma State's first no-hitter in four years last weekend. The Cowgirls batting lineup also features eight batters currently batting above .300.

Also at the Mizuno Classic last weekend, St. Francis (11-9) picked up victories over Maine and Omaha. The Red Flash play a midweek contest at No.1/5 Oklahoma Wednesday night before Pacific (8-9) heads to Oklahoma City coming off a 4-2 weekend at the NFCA Division III Leadoff Classic. Purdue (2-16) has faced a stacked tournament schedule dropping five games last weekend against Florida Atlantic, McNeese State, Illinois State and then No. 10 LSU.
