Women's Tennis Closes Out Regular Season at Missouri State

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Drake University women's tennis team travels to Springfield, Mo. on Sunday at 10 a.m. to close out the regular season.

Last weekend the Bulldogs stretched their winning streak to four after beating Valley opponents Illinois State, 5-2, and Bradley, 6-1. In addition to winning their fourth straight game, they also brought their conference record to 4-0 to stay at the top of the MVC and clinch a share of the regular season title.

In last Saturday's win over Illinois State, the Bulldogs swept the doubles competition to go up 1-0. They were able to hold their lead with a 4-2 record in the singles competition. Then against Bradley, Drake was able to jump out to an early lead, and swept the doubles competition for the second time of the weekend. Drake easily held their lead through singles play by winning five of six matches.

By the end of the weekend, freshman Liza Petushkova's singles win total rose to 18 and her singles win streak went to 12. Petushkova and her doubles partner, Tess Herder, went 2-0 on the weekend to bring their win total as a team up to 16.

Missouri State is led by Fati Khamissi, the Grizzlies' lone player with more than 10 wins in singles. In doubles play, Missouri State's top pair is Phoebe Boeschen and Anelisse Torrico who hold a 8-6 record this year.

After facing Missouri State, the Bulldogs will prepare for the Missouri Valley Conference Championship in Springfield, Mo. April 27-29. Matchups and times will be announced on Monday, April 23.
