Rowing to Race Creighton

The annual spring regatta between the two rivals was moved up one day in anticipation of inclement weather forecasted for Sunday.

CARTER LAKE, Iowa – The Drake University rowing team is set to race Creighton on Saturday afternoon on Carter Lake. The annual spring regatta between the two rivals was moved up one day in anticipation of inclement weather forecasted for Sunday.

The local rivals will compete in four different races, varsity 4+, 2nd varsity 4+, varsity 8+ and 2nd varsity 8+, on a 2,000-meter course on Carter Lake. The 2nd varsity 4+ race will not count in the final determination of the winner. Drake will look to avenge its loss to Creighton in the annual fall regatta between the programs in Des Moines.

Drake last raced during its spring break trip to Clemson, S.C. in March. The Bulldogs were defeated by fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference member, Marist, to close their time in South Carolina.

"It has been three weeks since our last race so we're excited to race someone," said head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. "We are hoping to have a different feel when we get out on the lake because our river (Des Moines) hasn't been able to give us an accurate gauge of how fast we are right now because the water level is so high. The three weeks between races have given us a chance to do lots of hard training, work on boat lineups and developing personalities for each of our boats. Now it is time to go out and race hard against a very good team in Creighton. Our team is up for the challenge."

Following Saturday's race, Drake will travel to Allendale, Mich. to compete in the two-day regatta, Lubbers Cup.
