CARTER LAKE, Iowa – The Drake University rowing team was edged by Creighton on Saturday afternoon on Carter Lake. The annual spring regatta between the two rivals was moved up one day in anticipation of inclement weather forecasted for Sunday.
 
The local rivals competed in four different races, varsity 4+, 2nd varsity 4+, varsity 8+ and 2nd varsity 8+, on a 2,000-meter course on Carter Lake. The 2^nd varsity 4+ race did not count in the final determination of the winner. The Bulldogs started the day with a victory in the varsity 4+ race, but the Bluejays were triumphant in the varsity 8+, 2^nd varsity 8+ and the exhibition 2^nd varsity 4+ races and earned the regatta win.
 
"Congratulations to Creighton who is a very good team and had a great day," said head coach Charlie DiSilvestro. We raced hard, but the rust of three weeks since our last race showed. They came off the water and knew they have room for improvement and will need to make adjustments moving forward. They are disappointed and its never fun losing, but racing today instead of Sunday does help set us up for an extra day of practice this week leading to Michigan. They will bounce back and we will put in a good week before heading to Michigan.
 
Following Saturday's race, Drake will travel to Allendale, Mich., April 14-15, to compete in the two-day, Lubbers Cup regatta.
