ST. LOUIS - Sophomore Mandi Roemmich (West Des Moines, Iowa) of the Drake University softball team has been selected Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week presented by Enterprise Bank and Trust Company, MVC Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday, May 23. It was the second time this season, Roemmich, was named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week. She and Collin Braithwaite of the Illinois State baseball team were honored for their performances during the period of May 14-20.
 
Roemmich, who helped Drake sweep the MVC regular season and tournament titles, started all four games at the NCAA Regionals. The Bulldogs earned their first-ever NCAA Tournament wins with a pair of victories over BYU in Eugene, Ore. She batted .357 with five hits (5-for-14) with one RBI and one walk and in the field, recorded five putouts and eight assists. Roemmich was selected to the NCAA Eugene All-Region Team for her performance in the four games.
 
Roemmich was the 2018 MVC Player of the Year, a 2018 All-MVC First Team honoree and member of the 2018 MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team. She led the team in batting average (.356), triples (2), doubles (12), walks (25), runs scored (34) and hits (64). Roemmich, who started all 57 games at shortstop, also hit her first career home run this past season and drove in a career-high 23 runs.
 
Roemmich, who holds a 4.00 grade point average in biology, was the 2018 MVC Elite 17 award winner for softball. The Elite 17 is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA in a MVC Championship.
 
Roemmich's honor brings the Bulldogs total up to 26 Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors this season, the most of any Valley school.
