Track & Field Team’s Season Comes To a Close At NCAA West Preliminary

Bulldogs narrowly miss advancing to NCAA Championship

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Drake University track & field team's season came to a close Friday evening at the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Sacramento, Calif.
 
The Bulldogs had three remaining student-athletes aiming to qualify for next month's NCAA Championship, but the three narrowly missed advancing onward.
 
Malik Metivier (Toronto, Ontario) returned to the oval Friday night after shattering the Drake school record in the 400-meter hurdles at 50.16 Thursday evening to earn a spot in Friday's quarterfinal.
 
Metivier finished 21st in the quarterfinal with a time of 51.88 to miss being one of the 12 competitors to advance to the NCAA Championship.
 
Senior Mary Young (Urbandale, Iowa) led off the evening with her fourth-straight NCAA West Preliminary appearance and clocked a 42nd-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.05.
 
Kundai Maguranyanga (Harare, Zimbabwe) also returned to the track Friday night in the 200 meters. The reigning Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year finished just a tenth of a second away from advancing to the NCAA West Preliminary quarterfinal with a time of 21.42. His time was the 30th fastest qualifying time of the evening.
 
The three student-athletes who competed Friday were the final of five Bulldogs who qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary, effectively concluding a 2017-18 season in which the team collected a total of 16 All-MVC honors.
