WICHITA, Kan. - On the strength of an 10-3 combined singles/doubles ledger at
the Missouri Valley Conference Individuals on Saturday (Oct. 6), the Drake
women's tennis will play for as many as four titles when the tournament
concludes on Sunday (Oct. 7).
In doubles, freshmen Mariel Ante (Riverside,
Calif.) and Maddie Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) advanced to the championship match of the No. 3
flight dispatching Anita Lee and Anastacia Simons of Southern
Illinois, 8-3. The duo will
battle Montse Blasco Fernandez and Satjaporn Moahajaroenkul of Wichita State in Sunday's finale.
In singles, junior Klavdija Rebol (Kranj, Slovenia) moved
into the title tilt at No. 1 downing Emmie Marx of Illinois State, 7-6 (2),
2-6, 6-3.
Johnson qualified for the
championship at No. 6 besting Gabby Phillips of Illinois State,
6-2, 6-3.
Reaching the finals of the No. 7
flight was Ante, who earned a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 decision past Southern
Illinois' Gisela Cairo Baza. Ante will face freshman teammate Jordan Eggleston (LaQuinta, Calif.), who downed Lauren Watts of Bradley, 6-1, 6-1.
