ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Missouri Valley Conference
has announced that Drake freshman Maddie
Johnson (Onalaska, Wis.) has been tabbed as the MVC Women's
Tennis Player of the Week. The recognition is the first for a Bulldog
this season and the initial accolade for Johnson during her Drake career.
Johnson
turned in a 5-1 combined singles/doubles record this past week, sparking the
Bulldogs to a 2-1 mark.
In
Drake's 6-1 victory versus Central Arkansas last Saturday (March 2), she paired
with freshman Lea Kozulic (Varazdin,
Croatia) to clinch the doubles point at the No. 2 position, before a win at the
No. 5 singles slot.
Johnson
then added a triumph at the No. 5 singles hole in the second of two matches on
the day against Northern Illinois.
She
capped her week with a pair of victories versus Nebraska Omaha on Sunday (March
3), including a win at the No. 2 singles position.
On the
season, Johnson owns a 31-13 combined singles/doubles ledger, including a
team-best 17-6 singles mark.
Johnson and the Bulldogs (6-6) return to action on Friday (March 8) with
an in-state showdown at Iowa State.
Match time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
