SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drake women's tennis competed at the MVC Tennis Championships this weekend hosted by Missouri State University. The Bulldogs were represented by a lone individual champion and duo that earned a doubles title.
Rebecca Ehn played her way through to a championship in the Flight 5 bracket. Ehn began her weekend with a victory over Maria Bezmenova of Bradley (6-1, 5-7, 6-3). She then took down top-seeded Silvia Pomarolli of Illinois State (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) to reach the championship round. In the finals, Ehn matched up with Murray State's Marit Kreugel and took down the Racer to capture first place (6-4, 7-5).
The Bulldogs' double champions,
Darinka Stepan and
Mille Haagensen, rolled through the Flight 2 bracket. Their weekend started with an 8-7(10-8) win over Belmont's Solomon/Kliimand team. They moved on to face UIC's duo of Malazonia/Nikolopoulou in a match that ended 8-6 in favor of the Dogs. Stepan and Hagensen then defeated Honore/Campigotto of Murray State to win the Flight 2 crown.
In other singles action,
Elizabete Klavinska earned third place in Flight 4, both
Oriana Parkins-Godwin and
Jyun-Yi Lee took third place in their respective flights, and Hagensen finished in sixth place in Flight 2.
Ehn and
Ines Stephani also teamed up for a runner-up finish in Flight 1 of the doubles portion of the championships.
Drake will head south this week for their next event. The Bulldogs will compete at the ITA Central Regionals in Stillwater, Okla. from Wednesday, Oct. 12 to Sunday, Oct. 16.
