POWELLS POINT, N.C. – The Drake University men's golf team had a pair of Bulldogs shoot under-par on the first day of the Old Dominion University/Outer Banks Intercollegiate on Sunday.
Sophomore
Tommi Avant led the team with a season-best two-under par, 69, and is tied for fifth-place. Junior
Drew Ison fired a one-under 70 and his tied for 12th.
Matt Lavery and
Chase Wicklund each carded a 74 (+3), while
Jack Kennedy recorded a 79 to round out the team's effort.
"We had a solid first round. We struggled on the first nine but played great on the back nine," said Drake head coach
Matt Lewis.
The Bulldogs recorded a team score of 287 (+3) and are in sixth-place. Drake is just two shots behind fifth-place George Mason and four from fourth-place UNCW. Akron is on top of the leaderboard with a score of 279 (-5), while Ball State and host ODU are in second (281) and third (282), respectively.
The Bulldogs will look to move the leaderboard on Monday for the second round of the ODU/Outer Banks Intercollegiate.
