DES MOINES, Iowa – No. 18 Loyola scored a late goal to edge the Drake University men's soccer team, 1-0, Saturday, Sept. 17 night at the Cownie Soccer Complex in each team's first Missouri Valley Conference action of the season.
Drake (3-4, 0-1 MVC) and Loyola (6-0, 1-0 MVC) each had scoring opportunities in the first half as the teams finished with four and five shots, respectively. However, it was the nationally ranked Ramblers who finally broke through with the winner in the 85
th minute.
Loyola had a corner kick that was sent from Brody Kraussel to Kirill Likhovlad who sent a long cross to Grant Stoneman that Stoneman headed in to the far post past Drake goalie
Darrin MacLeod (Waterloo, Ontario).
Senior
Mueng Sunday (Coralville, Iowa) led the Bulldogs with two shots, including one clean look in the first half that he blasted from just outside the box but it went into the hands of the Loyola goalie, Andrew Chekadanov.
Seniors
Ben LeMay (Hugo, Minn.) and
James Wypych (Wellington, New Zealand) each had one shot in the first half. Sophomores
Nic Jaimes (Olathe, Kan.) and
Ryan Merideth (East Moline, Ill.) recorded one shot each for Drake as well. For the game, Drake finished with six shots to Loyola's 10.
Drake plays at UIC Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
