LEMONT, Ill. – The Drake University men's golf team has two players in the top-21 through 36 holes at the Missouri Valley Conference Championship on Monday at the Cog Hill Dubsdread Course in Lemont, Ill.
 
"Overall we are disappointed with our play today, because we felt prepared and confident coming after having two good practice rounds," said Drake head coach Matt Lewis. "We just didn't execute the way we intended and it showed as we were +26 in our first 12 holes. We battled back to finish the last six holes of the first-round two-under. Then we got off to a better start in the second-round but struggled coming in."
 
After opening the day with a 79, junior Drew Ison bounced back in the second-round of the day, firing a one-over par, 73, for a total score of 152 and is tied for 17th-place.
 
Freshman Chase Wicklund led the Bulldogs in the first-round, shooting a two-over 74, but finished the day tied for 21st-place after registering an 80 to close out the day with a total score of 154 (74-80).
 
Sophomore Tommi Avant totaled a 157 (80-77), while junior Matt Lavery recorded a 160 (79-81). Freshman Kyle MacDonald rounded out the team's day with a total score of 162 (85-77).
 
The Bulldogs are tied for seventh-place with a total score of 619 (312-307) with Southern Illinois. Drake is nine strokes back from fifth-place Bradley (610).
 
"We know a low round tomorrow will help us climb the leaderboard and 18 holes of golf is a ton of golf so a lot can happen," said Lewis.
 
Drake will close out the season with the final round of the MVC Championship on Tuesday.
