The 2016-17 season featured many thrilling moments and accomplishments for Drake athletics. From conference titles, outstanding team and individual accomplishments, postseason appearances and significant regular season victories, the Bulldogs had plenty to celebrate as they look forward to the upcoming season. Before embarking on 2017-18, www.GoDrakeBulldogs.com will take a look back at the top 10 moments of the 2016-17 throughout the months of June and July.
The No. 4 moment of the 2016-17 season comes from the women's basketball team being the first in Missouri Valley Conference history to go undefeated (18-0) during regular season play after a 105-89 win over Wichita State on March 4, 2017, at the Knapp Center. Prior to the Bulldogs' record-setting MVC regular season run, the best start in league play was 12-0.
In the win over the Shockers, the Bulldogs shot an impressive 19-of-31 (61.3 percent) from the three-point arc, breaking the school record of 17 for the number of three-pointers made in a single game. Senior
Lizzy Wendell led the team with a game-high of 25 points and was followed by sophomore
Sammie Bachrodt and freshman
Brenni Rose, who each recorded career-highs of 23 and 22 points, respectively.
The 105 points were the most scored by a Drake team in a MVC game since the 1996-97 season. The 105 points on Wichita State and the 101 points on Illinois State earlier in the season (Feb. 10) mark the first time a Drake team has scored 100 or more points against a league opponent twice in a season since the 1994-95 team scored 100 on Evansville and 105 on Illinois State.
