DES MOINES, IOWA ? Creighton snapped Drake's 18-game Missouri Valley Conference undefeated streak with a 2-1 decision over the Bulldogs in women's soccer action Thursday night at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
It also marked the first time Drake has ever lost a MVC opener dating back to the program's inception in 2002.
The Bluejays scored all three goals in the contest. Drake's goal was recorded after senior
Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo.) took a shot in the 22nd minute (21:30) that was deflected into the net by a Creighton defender, which resulted in an own goal to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 advantage.
Creighton answered with a goal by Marcy Gans in the 23rd minute (22:30). Gans shot the ball from inside the top of the box just out of the reach of Drake goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.). Schroeder made five saves in goal for the Bulldogs.
Tara Bailey capped off the match's scoring in the 43rd minute (42:43) when she recorded the winning goal for the Bluejays. Bailey sent a header into the net off a corner kick from Heather Duncan.
Foote led all players with four shots in Drake's 13 shot attack. The shot totals were identical for both teams, with each squad taking seven shots in the fist half and six in the second.
The last time Drake lost an MVC match was at Northern Iowa, 2-1, on Oct. 24, 2003.
Drake, which fell to 3-7-2 and 0-1-0 in conference play, returns to action on Sunday facing Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. at the Cownie Soccer Complex. The Bulldogs will be celebrating their seven senior's accomplishments with senior day.
