NORMAL, ILL. ? The Drake women's soccer team dropped its final match of the regular season, at Illinois State, 2-1, Sunday. With the loss, the Bulldogs finish regular season action with a record of 6-9-2 and a 3-3-0 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play.
Drake freshman
Ali Walsh (Florissant, Mo.) scored an apparent game tying goal in the final seconds which would have sent the match into overtime, but it was ruled that her shot did not break the plane of the goal before time had expired.
Yvonne Northover scored the winning goal for the Redbirds in the 65th minute (64:06) on a free kick from the left corner 25-yards out.
Bethany Russ scored a goal for the Redbirds in the first minute of action (00:43) off a cross from Shannon Duggan 10-yards out on the right side to give Illinois State a 1-0 lead.
Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) scored the tying goal for the Bulldogs in the 49th minute (48:22) off a left cross from
Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo.) in the middle of the penalty box.
The two teams tied in shots with 13 each, while Drake took eight of those shots in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) made five saves in goal for the Bulldogs in 63 minutes of action. Katie Grill-Donovan made four saves in the complete game win for the Redbirds.
Foote led the Bulldogs effort with four shots. Thaden took two, both of which were on goal.
The Bulldogs will await the official 2007 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament bracket late Sunday to determine where and when they will play their opening round game for the tournament.
