DES MOINES, IOWA ? The Drake women's soccer team fought back from a 2-0 deficit at halftime but ultimately fell to Kansas, 2-1, at Drake Stadium Friday night, falling to 2-6-2 on the campaign.
“It was a disappointing first half against a hungry Big 12 team,” said Drake assistant coach
Lindsey Horner. “We followed the game plan in the second half and looked dangerous at times but ultimately it was too little too late.”
Rachel Morris one-timed a feed from Shannon McCabe to score the Jayhawks first goal in the 24th minute (23:15).
Monica Dolinsky added another score for Kansas when she took a feed from Kim Boyer and Jessica Bush in the 33rd minute (32:26).
The Bulldogs came out from halftime on fire as
Sarah Foote (Arvada, Colo.) scored her second goal of the season at 47:46 to move the Bulldogs within one goal. Senior
Lauren Hoguta (Thornton, Colo.) recorded an assist on the play.
The Jayhawks led the Bulldogs in shots, 10-6, with Colleen Quinn making two saves in goal for Kansas.
Drake goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) saved four shots for the Bulldog effort.
“Again we created chances but we were unable to capitalize on them,” continued Horner. "Now we have to continue to consistently play with heart as we hit the road to face Green Bay.”
Drake returns to action on Sunday at Green Bay, in its final tune-up before opening Missouri Valley Conference play. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
