Martin Named Prairie Farms/MVC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week

ST. LOUIS, MO. ? Jill Martin (Norwalk, Iowa/Norwalk) of Drake and Matt Braeuer of Wichita State have been selected the Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced on Wednesday (Nov. 28). Martin and Braeuer were honored for their performances during the period of November 19-25.

The Valleys Scholar-Athlete program, which is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies, honors conference student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom. The program began during the 1999-00 academic year.

“Our continued corporate partnership with Prairie Farms provides an important vehicle by which to honor our top student-athletes,” said Commissioner Elgin, who is in his 20th year with The Valley. “Our student-athletes are the league's best representatives, and we're happy to recognize Jill (Martin) and Matt (Braeuer) for their athletic and academic achievements.”

Martin, a senior from Norwalk, Iowa, posted back-to-back double-doubles, as the Bulldogs split a pair of games at the SMU Hoops for the Cure Classic in Dallas, falling to Kansas (69-64 on Nov. 23) and defeating Western Michigan (82-70 on Nov. 24).

Martin, who has a 3.35 cumulative grade-point average in elementary education, averaged 27.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in two games. Versus Kansas, she had 27 points and 14 boards, while against Western Michigan, Martin recorded her 28th career double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. In the WMU tilt, she became the eighth player in school history to compile at least 1,400 career points and 750 career boards.

To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
