IOWA CITY, IOWA ? The Drake women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to instate rival Iowa Friday night.
“Some games it's just not your day, unfortunately it just happened to fall on a day when most of the players were not having a good day,” said Drake head coach
Corbin Stone.
Kelsey Shaw scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute for the Hawkeyes on a header off a corner kick. Drake managed only two shots on goal for the match, taking seven overall shots.
Drake goalkeeper
Jenny Schroeder (Albuquerque, N.M.) saved a season-high six shots for the Bulldogs playing the entire 90 minutes.
Bulldogs senior
Nikki Thaden (Clive, Iowa) led all players with three shots.
“Iowa came prepared to play, they were well organized, disciplined and they were tough to break down. We were just the opposite, we weren't prepared to play and we did not give fourth our best effort. We failed to change the game and had trouble connecting passes. We just did not make the necessary adjustments as a team during the game to make a difference.”
“There were times when we could have been more direct and we played underneath, there were times when we should have played out to the feet and we just hoofed it. No matter what we did we were not on the same page,” said Stone.
Drake, which fell to 1-2-1, returns home for a match with No. 10 Florida Sunday at 1 p.m. at Drake Stadium.
“I am glad we got it out of our system so we could move on. It will be nice to return home and hopefully we will be ready to play Florida with more confidence and intelligence,” concluded Stone.
